Asylum Of The Daleks Recapped!

So, Asylum Of The Daleks, eh? What’s that all about then? If only somebody could provide a useful recap to tell you…

Lured to the original planet of the Daleks by a distress call from one Darla Von Karlsen, the Doctor swiftly works out that he’s been lured into trap. Once he figures it out, a Dalek eyestalk and gun emerge from Darla’s body and the Doctor is shot.

Fortunately, not only is he not dead, but the maritally-challenged Amy and Rory have been captured by similar methods and all three are now in rather a lot of trouble.

See, they’ve been captured by the Daleks, who take up the unusual chant of “Save the Daleks!” and fire the Doctor and co at a planet containing the Asylum of the Daleks (after giving them protective wristbands), from whence is coming an unusual signal; a song from Carmen…

On the surface, they find the remains of a downed ship (the Alaska) and the remains of her crew. Surprisingly, they promptly turn into more of the pseudo-Roboman Dalek puppets seen earlier. It turns out that happens to anyone who stays there too long due to the Nano Cloud (nanogenes, making a return from The Empty Child) without the protection of wristbands. Shockingly, the Dalek puppets took Amy’s off her wrist.

Keeping his wristband very firmly on his wrist is Rory, who got separated from the others upon landing and is now right in the middle of the Dalek asylum. He accidentally wakes them up (in a chilling scene) and is guided to safety by Oswin Oswald’s voice on the intercom while the Doctor and Amy make their way to them. Along the way, the Nano Cloud infection causes Amy to go a tiny bit mental; she sees dancing ballerinas and people dressed up, when they’re actually the insane Daleks having a ball.

Once Amy and Rory are reunited after an incident with a self-destructing Dalek, they still have to keep Amy loved-up, so the Doctor leaves them alone while he goes to retrieve Oswin (played, in what must be one of the best-kept secrets of Nu Who, by new companion Jenna-Louise Coleman). This presents the Ponds with an all-too-convenient chance to solve their marital difficulties (in which Rory brings up the perfectly valid point that he loves her more than she loves him). This whole plotline is possibly cleared up much too quickly and is symbolic of the whole “fairytale relationship” aspect of the Ponds’ marriage.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, the Doctor has to go through what passes for the Dalek equivalent of Intensive Care. This naturally terrifies the living [Kaled - Language Ed] out of him and he hammers on Oswin’s door, begging to be let in. After a while, she does, seemingly delaying merely to delete all information on him from the telepathic database of the Daleks. Once he’s in, his problems are just beginning. Because Oswin is a Dalek herself - the end stage of the process seen earlier with the Dalek puppets.

This is rather troublesome to say the least; obviously the Doctor can’t take an insane Dalek back with him (albeit a Dalek that used to be human - Oswin was one of the former crewmembers of the Alaska, a genius working as a Junior Entertainment Manager). And Oswin, upon realising the truth of her situation, almost immediately tries to kill the Doctor. She backs down at the last minute, and turns off the force-field. Since that’s the only thing stopping the Dalek ship in orbit from blowing up the planet, it’s probably best that the Doctor and company get out of there sharpish.

Taking advantage of the teleporter that Amy and Rory have been standing on for the last several minutes after having resolved their marital difficulties with a quick discussion (too quick if you ask us), they beam back onto the Dalek spaceship…right into the TARDIS. This rather neatly gets round the difficulty of beaming back onto the ship without getting shot on sight (the Daleks were hoping the Doctor would be taken out with the planet, see) and serves to antagonise them further by serving them with a mystery (since their collective memory was erased, all they see is a mysterious stranger teleporting aboard and taunting them).

This leaves the Daleks repeating Dorium Maldovar’s mantra: “DOC-TOR WHO? DOC-TOR WHO?” and once he’s dropped Amy and Rory off home, the Doctor starts chanting it in jubilation, marvelling at the new power this gives him over the Daleks. Fade out…

Next week: Dinosaurs On A Spaceship!

Kasterborous Magazine Cover Art Revealed!

First, we hinted about the Kasterborous Magazine. You scratched your heads.

Then, we told you what was in it. You dropped your jaw.

Today, we reveal the cover art. You will wet your pants!

We’re currently putting the finishing touches to what is clearly the most audacious Kasterborous project yet, and as you can see by the striking image on the right, one of the main draws and the one we’re most excited about is an interview by Elton Townend-Jones with his friend John Guilor!

Gracing the cover, Guilor - he voices the First Doctor in the new Planet of Giants DVD reconstruction - is one of those rarities, a Doctor Who fan who actually gets to play the Time Lord, thanks to his striking vocal abilities.

We’re still a little bit away from issuing a confirmed final run-down of the contents, but we can promise you convention reports, the first part of a look at the world of Doctor Who video games and even get you started on the path to building your own Dalek as we kick-off our enthusiast-centric In The Shed series.

You might even find a few words from some extremely famous time travellers inside…

To celebrate the release of this flipping ace new cover (you can tell we’re excited, can’t you?) we’re opening the project to pre-orders. As things stand this is a 50 page magazine, with some recent additions likely to push that total up.

As a result the following button is an opportunity to get in early with a low price purchase of just £4.99 (plus £1.99 package and posting).

Electronic versions of Kasterborous Magazine #1 will be made available, we’ll update you as to when and how these can be ordered.

Matt Smith: The Thin White Duke

Doing his best Thin White Duke impression Matt Smith has been channelling glam legend David Bowie in a recent photo shoot for Empire magazine’s massive Winter TV Preview.

Embodying Ziggy himself Matt told Empire:

“I’m a huge Bowie fan. I loved the Olympic Opening Ceremony because I thought, ‘How amazing, the plethora and heritage of music we have. Incredible! Wonderful!’”

Something else incredible and wonderful is the new series of Doctor Who which amongst its many ch-ch-changes includes the arrival of Jenna-Louise Coleman, whose arrival has given Matt new insight into the Doctor:

“He’s endless, he’s boundless, he’s limitless! He constantly allows you to reinvent him. That’s what’s interesting about this year. It’s about what a new companion reveals in him.”

Sharing his love for this Space Oddity Matt added:

“It’s like a Shakespearian tragedy, Doctor Who. There’s a theatre to it. Because every day you’re either facing the end of the world, or the loss of the person you love most, or the invasion of the most appalling creature or alien that you can ever imagine. But in the face of that tragedy there is also comedy. It’s about adventure.”

Asked about the mid-season climax, where once again the Doctor comes face to face with the Weeping Angels and bids farewell to the Ponds (all New York in a city where it’s hard to be a saint):

“It’s terribly exciting because they’re my favourite monster and it’s one of my favourite cities. If I had my way I’d shoot the whole thing in New York.”

The full interview and photo shoot appears in this month’s Empire available now from all good retailers.

All of this makes us wonder, of course, if Matt is aware with Bowie’s own connection with Doctor Who - back in1983 he was offered the role of Sharaz Jek in Caves of Androzani, while of course Water of Mars’ Bowie Base One was named after the rock legend.

Doctor Who returns to screens this evening with Asylum of the Daleks at 7.20pm on BBC One and BBC HD and at 9/8c on BBC America.

Buy Your Own 4th Doctor Scarf From Forbidden Planet!

Are you not one of the few Doctor Who fans lucky enough to own a hand-knitted or extortionately priced replica of perhaps one of the most famous scarves in history?

Then fret no more! Now you can pre-order a replica of the Fourth Doctor’s scarf (his original, brighter one, that is) from the good folks at Forbidden Planet.

It’s 12 feet long - 13 if you have the tassles with it (neither are as long as one of the original scarves, which reached 24 feet long at one point!). You may want to use it to recreate those moments from the classic series such as when the Doctor and Sarah Jane Smith tripped Eldrad down a chasm, or when the Doctor needed something to measure the length of a puzzle.

The scarf costs £49.99 and ships from 1st October, and we know it would make a nice Christmas present when that time of year rolls around again. Yours won’t be knitted by that witty little knitter Madame Nostradamus herself, of course, but it’s still a pretty nifty little number!

Arthur Darvill Graces Gay Times Cover

October’s issue of Gay Times is out soon, and features Arthur Darvill on the cover and in an exclusive interview with the magazine.

It turns out that this is Arthur’s first proper fashion shoot and he gives GT exclusive highlights of his series finale and what lies ahead for the never-ending Rory…
Arthur spills on working with the Daleks:

“It feels right, it’s really easy to forget that you’re doing Doctor Who, because you’re just kind of doing it, but then I turn up to work and there’s loads of Daleks everywhere. It’s like, oh, right, this is what I imagined it would be like. I’ve had quite a few where I’ve started talking to them and you realise there’s not actually anyone in it, I’m just talking to a piece of plastic…”

On leaving Doctor Who at the same time as co-star Karen Gillan:

“I think the worst thing to do would be to outstay your welcome on a thing like this. We were both very keen to do a really good chunk of time on it and get the best out of it that we could. We’re pushing it to a peak and then we’ll leave it there.”

Arthur’s finale:

“It’s amazing, when we were discussing how we were leaving, Steven [Moffat, producer and head honcho] just said, “you’re going to go out on a bang.” And it’s more than that, it’s brilliant. The last scene we did properly was – it was really nice actually – it was the three of us going into the TARDIS at the end of an episode.”
This is just a hint of the full interview, which can be found in the October issue of GT which is on sale Wednesday 5 September and available to download digitally from the App Store and Android Market/Google Play.

What if the Doctor Used a Nokia Lumia 900?

[caption id=”attachment_125060” align=”alignright” width=”465”]

Does this phone remind you of anything?[/caption]

Nok Nok, a website dedicated to all things Nokia have asked the question; the ultimate question, the question hidden in plain sight: What smartphone would the Doctor use?

Unsurprisingly, (as far as they’re concerned) it’s a Nokia.

More specifically it’s the Nokia Lumia 900

– a Windows phone whose ‘tile’ system bares more than a passing resemblance to the panel on the TARDIS doors.

Now, rather than dedicating an entire television series arch to unfolding said question and then a further series to answer it Nok Nok have instead listed the reason why the Doctor would pick a Windows phone over an Android, Apple or even an open source operating system.

Firstly there are the specifications; what better way to check out facts about the myriad planets and time zones the Doctor visits than with a 4:3-inch screen? Exploring the planet and learning about individual customs yourself? No!

And don’t forget the eight megapixel camera with the new excellent Nokia Camera Extras – including the fabulous the Panorama app!

Now, it’s well documented that the Doctor has a habit of getting lost or arriving at the wrong time or location but with Nokia Drive and Nokia Maps, the Doctor will have no excuse for his enchanting, magical unplanned trips to untold wonders and will instead become punctual – which is way more exciting, I think you’ll agree.

As with most smartphone, it’s all about the apps and the Doctor has plenty to choose from:

“For example, the Sonic Screwdriver may be as iconic as the good Doctor’s TARDIS but in this age where everything is being integrated into your smartphone, having a virtual Sonic Screwdriver is just as good.”

Which it almost certainly isn’t…

“Options are available to mute the Sonic Screwdriver sound, have a loop instead of repeating endlessly and to stop the vibration of the Sonic Screwdriver.”

Because what the Doctor needs most is a less annoying life saving device like say, his actual screwdriver.

With Series 7 imminent we’re about to see a whole host of the Doctor’s greatest foes grace our screens once again with Asylum of the Daleks, so what better time to for the Doctor to download the Dalek Soundboard – which plays a raft of Dalek sounds from various incarnations to defend himself in oddly specific situations.

For more on the Nokia Lumia 900 and more Doctor Who apps head over to Nok Nok.

(And yes, we’re well aware that the Doctor is far more likely to use a device running an open-source operating system… it’s fun to see that so many tenuous links to the show are cropping up to earn some coin though, isn’t it?)

Series 7 Previews in DWM 451!

Doctor Who Magazine issue 451, published on Thursday 30 August, features exclusive previews of the new series of Doctor Who – and the show’s executive producer, Steven Moffat, teases the ultimate fate of the Ponds:
“As you’ll be able to tell from the end of Episode 5, I’ve had the very last moment of Amy Pond in my head for quite some time…”
Available in three different covers (as seen here - click to view in a larger resolution), the new issue of DWM previews three episodes of the new series, going behind the scenes to talk to cast and crew…

ASYLUM OF THE DALEKS – DWM takes over the Asylum for Doctor Who’s most ambitious episode yet. Matt Smith shares his thoughts on the Doctor’s arch enemies, Steven Moffat on the challenges of keeping the Daleks fresh and how Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill feel about the beginning of the end for Amy and Rory.

DINOSAURS ON A SPACESHIP – it’s an episode of Doctor Who packed to the rafters with dinosaurs. On a spaceship! Writer Chris Chibnall reveals how his script lived up to that title, and what challenges did the FX team face on bringing so many dinosaurs to life?

A TOWN CALLED MERCY – guest stars Adrian Scarborough and Ben Browder on how thrilled they were to join Doctor Who for an adventure into the Wild West, how the crew enjoyed their time on location in sunny Spain, and what writer Toby Whithouse thought of being out of his comfort zone.

ALSO IN THIS ISSUE:

THE USUAL SUSPECTS – the writers of the new series are given the once over by Doctor Who’s executive producer, Steven Moffat (including himself!) in a curtain-raising Production Notes.

GUILTY AS CHARGED? – John Nathan-Turner was Doctor Who’s most colourful and controversial producer, guiding the show to dizzying heights, but perhaps a few lows too. Luminaries and experts from Doctor Who past and present assemble for the first in a two-part feature to assess the work of the series’ longest-serving producer in The Trial of John Nathan-Turner.

COLD FRONT – the Doctor, Amy and Rory arrive in Prague in the dying days of the Cold War. Revolution is on the horizon, but the Doctor senses something unreal in the air. What is the significance of the book The Sorrows of Prague, and why will Yuri Azarov and his terrifying companion stop at nothing to retrieve it? Part One of The Broken Man, the latest comic strip written by Scott Gray with art from Martin Geraghty.

IS THIS DEATH? – companions come and go, but should they ever die? Johnny Candon and Toby Hadoke weigh up the pros and cons of crash-landing to Earth in an out-of-control freighter, or heading off into the sunset to marry Brian Blessed in A Battle of Wits.

TAKE ART – DWM’s intrepid Time Team – Chris, Emma, Michael and Will – go for gold as the Doctor and Rose land in an ordinary housing estate where extraordinary things are happening as children are going missing, trapped in the drawings of Chloe Webber. Will the Doctor make it to the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympics as The Time Team views Fear Her?

COMING OF AGE – Doctor Who’s 21st year saw a season packed with exciting cliff-hangers, companion departures, a tour de force performance from the leading man, andarguably the finest Doctor Who story ever made. Countdown to 50 reaches 1984 and Series 21.

ALL IN THE MIND – mind-sucking alien parasites, prison riots, a nerve-gas missile and the Master at his most scheming – find out how the Third Doctor, Jo and UNIT fought The Mind of Evil in this month’s Fact of Fiction.

LIGHT MY FIRE – the Watcher warns of the pitfalls of predicting the near future as A History of Doctor Who in 100 Objects reaches number 22 – the Olympic Torch. Was the 2012 of Fear Her remotely like the real thing? Also stare into the eyes of The Six Faces of Delusion, flick through The Stockbridge English Dictionary and marvel at the Supporting Artist of the Month in Wotcha!

With a choice of THREE different covers, DWM 451 is on sale from Thursday 30 August, priced £4.50.

Kasterborous Magazine is Coming - And It's All About YOU

Ah, you loyal, wonderful Kasterborous readers. From time to time we make some mad hints, we tease you, and fortunately only about half of you email us asking what in the blazes we’re talking about.

It could be much worse, and certainly our recent hints about a Kasterborous Magazine have got quite a few people excited. But what on earth is going on? How can a website such as Kasterborous consider spreading its wings into a publishing project of this kind?

Well, it all started with a chat with Vworp Vworp! editor Gareth Kavanagh, who had long believed we could spread out into a magazine-style project. After much research and brainstorming, it struck me that there was scope for a particular type of article that was too in-depth for the website - not the sort of thing that you might consider disposable.

So, with this in mind, we set about creating a contents list for a potential magazine. I headed back down to Manchester to chat with Gareth, who was very enthusiastic about the format!

Because, dear reader, it may surprise you to know this, but there are several Doctor Who themed magazines and fanzines in production. From the obvious DWM all the way down to the smallest PDF fanzine, all manner of topics are covered.

But not quite like this.

What we have put together is, essentially, both a full Doctor Who magazine and a Doctor Who fanzine. If you like, it is a magazine about fans - so what better description could it have than “fanzine”?

Here, at last, is a sample of the contents. To the right, you’ll find a piece of James McLean’s concept art that will appear in the finished product.

Now, naturally we don’t want to give too much away, and one or two items are subject to change, but we’re pretty sure you’re going to enjoy:

 • In the Shed
 • Doctor Who and the Curse of the Videogames
 • Audio Club
 • Our exclusive Crash of the Elysium feature
 • A very special - and fascinating - interview
 • Recreating Classic FX
 • Plus lots more!

This is only a small sample of what is in store for readers of the magazine, the pricing and dispatch details of which will be announced at a later date.

We’ve also obfuscated some of the items above, which we’ll be releasing details on as we get nearer to publication.

As things stand, we don’t require any contributors for issue 1, only your support. We need you to share this news item, join our Kasterborous Magazine Facebook group and generally get as excited about this as we are!

We’re intending that this should be the ultimate bible for Doctor Who fans - rather than being a print version of the website you’re reading, it should stand on its own two feet, and this can only be achieved (we think) by reflecting the activities of fans, sharing what goes on in the worlds of Doctor Who cosplay, prop building, gaming, audios and books, live events and more!

Kasterborous Magazine isn’t about mimicking other mags - it’s about YOU.

We’ll have more details soon!

New Dalek Desk Defender!

Tired of not being able to exterminate your boss while you slave away in a cubicle-dwelling 9-5 job?

Now you can get the Dalek Desk Defender, who will take care of any unwanted visitors to your desk once you’ve plugged it into your nearest USB slot (fortunately it won’t actually exterminate them). It lights up, makes noises and wheels around your work surface.

Of course, it’s restricted in its movement by the length of the USB cable but we’re assured that it’s long enough to take care of most of your needs. And it won’t be able to leave your desk should it decide to go on a rampage.

It comes with an in-built motion sensor that works anywhere from 6 to 9 feet away depending on the lighting. Of course, this does mean that it will most likely start making a racket when you come back to your own desk to turn the thing off.

A pretty nifty gadget, wouldn’t you say? You’d have to decide for yourself whether the $39.99 (£25.27, or £23.37 from Amazon!

) outlay is worth it, of course, but look at it.

How can you say no to that?

Assimilation #3 Out Now!

Don’t forget to pick up your copy of Star Trek: The Next Generation/ Doctor Who: Assimilation #03, available at any good comic book store.

The comic series, written by David and Scott Tipton and Tony Lee, pairs a few incarnations of the two massive franchises, as the Doctor, Amy, Rory and the crew of the USS Enterprise face off against the Cybermen and the Borg. Here’s issue 3’s synopsis:

“The true horror of the Borg-Cybermen alliance has been revealed, but what course of action will Captain Picard and the Doctor agree upon? And will the Doctor’s recently resurfaced memories shed new light on the dilemma?”

Issue 1 sold out remarkably fast, as did the special Forbidden Planet editions signed by Lee. The eight-part series is getting great reviews so far, as SFX’s Alasdair Stuart says:

“Massive in scale and hugely fun, this is how a crossover should be done.”

Issue 4 is released on 29th August, and sees the two enemies wreck destruction on the galaxy:

“The Federation is met with the possibility of assistance, but from an unthinkable source! Will Captain Picard and the Doctor agree to an alliance that could be worse than the enemy they face?”

IDW’s new ongoing Doctor Who series starts next month – as does the TV series! – with Andy Diggle and Mark Buckingham at the helm.

Finally, The Rory Williams Action Figure!

Shortly after Rory Williams leaves the show, fans can (finally) re-enact his adventures with an action figure for the first time!

The figure is based on his initial “life-preserver” appearance and boasts no trappings from his “Lone Centurion” alter ego. Something tells us that will be saved for a later action figure.

It’s interesting to note that the synopsis of the toy features no mention of his adventures past the end of Series 5. We wouldn’t mind this but it completely ignores the fact that he’s had a baby (who turned out to be River “spoilers” Song), left the TARDIS full time (temporarily) and had to condemn an older version of his wife to death…

Amy Pond’s fiancée who, on his stag night found himself whisked away in the TARDIS. After defeating the Saturnynes and the Dream Lord, Rory was killed saving the Doctor’s life during a battle with the Silurians. However, his body was absorbed by the time energies leaking across time and space – resulting in him never having existed. However, his essence was placed into an Auton replica of himself in Roman times and after briefly reuniting with Amy, he accidentally killed her. To restore her, the Doctor placed her in the Pandorica and for two thousand years Rory stood guard over her, the legendary Lone Centurion. When time was finally rebooted, Rory became human again, married Amy and once again joined her and the Doctor in the TARDIS.

What do we think? It’s hard to tell based on one picture, but this should make a fine addition to any fan’s collection. And at least it bears some resemblance to Arthur Darvill…

You can pre-order the action figure from Forbidden Planet for £8.99, and it will be released on October 5th.

Brandon Seifert Discusses IDW's Doctor Who

Recently, IGN caught up with Doctor Who writer Brandon Seifert (who writes not for the television series but for the IDW comics range of Doctor Who) about his upcoming work with the company and his new Time Lord adventure.

Seifert’s work can be enjoyed through either his Witch Doctor series or his Hellraiser: The Road Below comics but his most exciting piece that’s due to come out is his new Doctor Who two parter starring the Eleventh Doctor and Rory! Whilst not giving too much away, he spoke about the plot for his latest story:
“It’s a time-travel “road-trip” buddy comedy between the Doctor and Rory! I love Rory, and I love his dynamic with the Doctor… This is Rory and the Doctor, lost in a malfunctioning TARDIS trying to get back to where they left Amy, squabbling throughout time and space!”
Covering the whole of time and space (or as much as Seifert could fit into a two part comic) this adventure will be an unforgettable tale with more than a few comedy bits to enjoy! But does the task of writing a tale for a comic rather than television make things easier or harder for Brandon:
“The Doctor has a time machine that’s also a spaceship, he can go anywhere in the whole life-span of the universe… as long as there’s enough money for the costumes, sets and special effects. But in comics, that’s not a problem. Famously, comics are said to have an unlimited budget — it just comes down to the creators’ imaginations and the amount of time the artist has.”
So with this new adventure, expect plenty of scope and imagination to shine through! To find out who is Seifert’s favourite Doctor and companion plus for more information about his other comic book tales, you can check out the full interview at IGN.

Due to popular demand, the publishing house Telos Publishing is bringing out Paul Scoones’ new book, The Comic Strip Companion, in a limited edition hardback.

Featuring a cover by original comic strip artist Bill Mevin, Scoones’ book takes you through 1964 to 1979 of the comic strip’s run and features comments from some of the original artists and writers. It also features notes on production context and things like continuity and what caused the adventures to come into being.

If you’ve already ordered the paperback, fret not: there is an option to upgrade to the hardback if you ordered it directly from the Telos website. In any event, it’s not like you get extra content for picking one version over another - both versions clock in at a hefty 608 pages (with 8 of those being in full colour to show off some of the comic strip covers of the period).

The book is due to be published at the end of September, and the paperback version is available for £16.99 from Amazon

. The hardback is £30 plus p&p and can be ordered from the Telos website.

(Via A Life More or Less Ordinary: Limited Hardback Edition).

John Guilor: Man of a Time Lord's Voices

This week sees the DVD release of the 1964 William Hartnell story Planet of Giants. As you may know, this story was originally recorded as a four-parter but in order to add pace it was almost immediately truncated to three parts at the behest of Doctor Who creator Sydney Newman.

At the time the decision was made, the edited material was apparently junked, never to be seen again.

Until now (sort of).

One of the most anticipated, discussed and intriguing aspects of the DVD release is a special feature in which the story is once again re-instated to four parts, utilising existing footage, animation and the vocal talents of surviving cast members and modern voice artists.

But what about the Doctor? Who could possibly rise to the challenge of reproducing the idiosyncratic mannerisms of the great William Hartnell. It’s that man again, John Guilor (who we have previously featured concerning a project to animate Shada)!

Regular Kasterborous reviewer Elton Townend Jones has known Guilor for many years. Once we became aware of this, it was time to hide his fluid links and demand an interview with the jobbing actor and lifelong Doctor Who fan.

After all, it was only right that he should get together with John and find out what it was like to become the new old Doctor. Of course, it wasn’t the first time that this had happened…
”I had been recommended as a voice artist to (special features producer) Ian Levine by Toby Hadoke. Ian was, at the time, engaged in numerous private projects requiring the voices of several Doctors, some with us, some no longer with us. We worked together on various things for about eight months before Planet of Giants was mentioned. But during that time, I voiced six different Doctors.”
For John, it was a massive learning curve, despite insisting that he could only achieve the first and fourth Doctors with what he considered “any degree of satisfaction. However, he was working for Ian Levine…
”Ian being Ian, he pushed and pushed me. I’m grateful for that, because he made me work hard and well outside my comfort zone, which is the only way you get good or amazing results. I had never thought of myself as an impressionist, and always hated stand-up routines by impressionists – but I guess I’m doing something different here, so that’s okay.”
If you’re looking for a comparison, think more along the lines of Michael Sheen than Mike Yarwood. If you haven’t had the pleasure of Guilor’s abilities, we previously featured a showreel from his website, which you can catch again here…

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iuw7nNHdnH0

Being able to actually “do” any of the Doctors is pretty tough as they all have very particular ways of delivering dialogue in addition to the vocal traits of the actors concerned. Comedian John Culshaw made his name with his Fourth Doctor impression, but on review, this is more of an interpretation, caricatured more towards the grotesque than anything approaching accuracy. John Guilor, on the other hand delivers a voice that could actually be Tom Baker in the 1970s.
I discovered quite early on that I could achieve a very convincing Tom. Now, as I get older, people often say ‘Christ, you even look like him’. I’ve been asked to ‘do Tom’ for the past ten years – although I avoided adverts and anything else that may upset the man himself!
Of course, being able to do something almost naturally isn’t quite the same as being asked to do it in front of other people and a microphone, especially when the other people in the room were present when the original lines were delivered. So how did John prepare for the mammoth task of playing the First Doctor opposite William Russell and Carole Ann Ford?
”By watching Hartnell episodes on a loop. The audio soundtracks were on in the car and I’d repeat lines, skip the CD back, listen, repeat, skip back, listen, and so on, before finally making test recordings – some of which even sent a chill down my own spine.”
This is the tip of the iceberg from a fascinating chat with talented voice actor and occasional Doctor Who John Guilor. We’ll have full details on how you can enjoy the rest of this great interview at a later date…

Due for release on Monday, August 20th, Planet of Giants can be ordered from Amazon for £12.99.

(Additional words by Elton Townend Jones, to whom big thanks are owed!)

A PodKast with Speculation!

It’s podKast time again, and this week Brian Terranova, Christian Cawley and James McLean are taking a wider view of recent news and events, including some cosplay competition success for Brian, a recent viewing of The War Machines for Christian and thoughts on John Simm vs Derek Jacobi as the Master for James.

You won’t be surprised to learn that there is some Series 7 speculation in there too, mainly concerning the broadcast date. At the time of recording we still didn’t know about the most likely (but yet to be confirmed) date, so forgive us for our calendar musings at the back end of the discussion.

Anniversary Monopoly: The Final Design?

You may have looked at last week’s report on the Doctor Who Monopoly: 50th Anniversary Edition set and thought: ‘you know, if only the board was slightly different – then I’d snap that bad boy up in a heartbeat!’

Well ponder no more my hypothetical friend with too much money on their hands, because (yes!) the board in the previous article was nothing but a clever ruse!

Those wily brains at Winning Moves just wanted you to think it wasn’t very good in order to make this one seem better by comparison!

Now behold! The final design for the Fiftieth Anniversary set complete with: More space! A different logo! (which I’m hoping isn’t the official anniversary logo) and pretty much the same Doctor poses just rearranged in a slightly more appealing way (Sixth Doctor fans, sorry, you still get ‘tiny headed, frowny faced’ Doctor)

The Doctor Who: Monopoly 50th Anniversary set is available now to pre-order for release on the 28th August for £26.99.

Is This Toy a Spoiler?

It’s unlikely, we know, but could this relatively innocent-looking toy be a major plot spoiler for Doctor Who Series 7?

Available from Forbidden Planet now (dispatch begins on August 20th), the Doctor Who: Electronic Q.L.A. Anti-Time Device is just £19.99. But spoilerphobes might wonder if that is a price worth paying for the following:
After the Doctor disappeared, the Cybermen and Daleks went to war across the universe. And on each world they destroyed they left in their wake, Stone Angels, picking over the dead and dying.

But the Cleric army fought back and scoured the dead worlds left after the wars, looking for the wreckage of Daleks, Cybermen, and broken Angels to create a hugely powerful ‘anti-time’ device. A device part Dalek, part Cyber technology and used the Quantum signature from the Angel to trigger a Gateway to pull enemies into the time Vortex…. Erasing them from Time completely.
What do you think - spoiler or a brilliantly conceived piece of back story for a basic toy gun? Don’t you just love the Cyber-handle butt?

Cyberman for Sale!

It’s surely a long-held dream of many-a-whovian to own original props and costumes. And especially to own something related to the Big Two: the Daleks and Cybermen. Well, now part of that dream can come true.

Phoenix Rising has a complete Cyberman costume, with gun, (circa Earthshock) for sale on eBay

. Produced as a replica by Sevans in the Wilderness Years - aka the 1990s – it’s a higher quality suit than those used on television, with a gun that uses red strobe lighting to imitate the effect of being fired. The head and chest unit is particularly impressive, sporting black ‘handlebars,’ and would look incredible in any surroundings. (Great for dinner parties, I’m sure.)

Finishing at 7:05pm tonight, it’s achieved its starting bid of £2,000 with ease, but increasing in £50 increments, it’s bound to go for a huge price.

But if you’re looking for something more than a ‘mere’ replica, the seller also has an original Cyberman gun for sale

, used in 1983’s The Five Doctors.

It’s obviously extremely rare, especially as it comes with a certificate of authenticity… and the

lights still work! It currently has just one bid – of £1,400 – but it’s guaranteed to rocket up before the auction’s end tomorrow morning at 06.27am.

The Five Doctors celebrated Doctor Who’s 20th anniversary, which saw four Doctors and various companions come up against all manner of foes, including Cybermen, a Dalek, the Master – and a grassy slope!

The eBay seller says he also has a Genesis of the Daleks-era Davros replica, which should go on sale soon.

Will you be bidding on any of these items…?

I Always Dress for the Occasion!

Women – buy these. Men – brace yourselves.

Black Milk has released two Doctor Who-related items for the dedicated followers of fashion (and fandom). Though both are described merely as having ‘Police Box’ designs, it’s obviously the TARDIS.

The TARDIS mini-dress is available for £67, while the leggings are £51. Now, that might seem a lot, but they’re very cool, and, frankly, very sexy. Especially with hip, faux-geeky glasses.

Designed by James Lillis, and made in Australia, both use polyester primarily. The dress is also made of Lycra, and the leggings, spandex (the stuff of superheroes!); the former is already out-of-stock in two sizes – small and large – but more are being made. And you can show them off by sharing your pictures on Facebook or Twitter by including #bmpoliceboxdress and #bmpoliceboxlegs in your tweets.

Both look pretty good with boots that have silvery soles. It’s futuristic, y’see.

Now, we don’t actively encourage smutty jokes in the comments, but then again, we don’t really stop you, either…

Doctor Who Monopoly: 50th Anniversary Edition

Don’t be fooled by his happy countenance and whimsical facial hair; that Rich Uncle Pennybags offering to take your hand and drag you into the magical world of foreclosure on the box of the THIRD Doctor Who: Monopoly set is offering you nothing more than heartache and regret.

No, unlike his iconic counterpart, who clasped Rose’s hand as he took her on a magical, wonderful journey across time and space; all you’ll receive from old Pennybags sweaty palms is a trip to a hastily assembled, poorly conceived world of missed opportunities.

You might be thinking: “How hard is it to create a halfway decent Doctor Who: Monopoly set?”

All you have to do is make the playing pieces iconic Doctor Who props, include the odd obscure reference in the community chest cards to keep the die-hard fans happy and don’t overthink it; after all if the Pandorica is a prison, then make it the jail.

Job done, pass go and collect 200 credits.

Well we’ve never won 2nd prize at a beauty contest but were sure that just slapping a picture of the Doctor on your dad’s old Monopoly board is a bit of an insult to the licence.

So in a characteristic last throw of the dice Winning Moves are set to release a fiftieth anniversary Doctor Who: Monopoly Set in a move that’s either going to solve all these problems or just offend fans of both the classic and new series in one foul swoop.

This is more than likely an item that is going to sell very well indeed over the next couple of years, featuring all eleven Doctors, favourite companions, and special Time Lord-themed pieces!

The jail and the Go! Square are still the same (perhaps fans of “Jake the Jailbird” and “Officer Edgar Mallory” will kick off) and while using the TARDISes as the Railway squares make sense; the logic unravels when it comes to other spaces (Why would you have to pay for the Sonic Screwdriver? Does the Doctor really have to pay Car Tax?) (Um, Bessie? - Ed)

Some thought has gone into the set as well: instead of representing a particular borough of London, the colours now represent one of the Doctors foes; so for the green squares it’s the Daleks and three iconic episodes from the shows history while the red squares represent the Master.

It’s not rocket science but then neither is a Doctor Who Monopoly set.

As amateur consumer advice experts Status Quo once said; “You pay your money, you take your choice” and in this case be prepared to pay quite a bit.

The Limited Edition (5000 copies) Doctor Who: Monopoly Fiftieth Edition set is available to pre-order now from Forbidden Planet for £26.99 to be released 28th August.

A Mad Man With A Box, designed by freelance illustrator, Paul Watts, is available for pre-order now, suitable for both men and women, priced £14.99.

It’s obviously available in a range of sizes, covering chest sizes 34- 36 (small), 38- 40 (medium) and 42-44 (large), but you can email Paul if you need another size, and he’ll endeavour to suit your needs. He says:

It’s well worth checking out his website www.paulwatts-illustration.co.uk, which includes stunning illustrations of Jenna-Louise Coleman, the TV movie (for the fanzine, Panic Moon, now on hiatus) and the 1960s movie Doctor, Peter Cushing. Pre-order the t-shirts today from Paul’s website shop.

A Mary Tamm PodKast

Doctor Who fans were left aghast recently at the sad loss of the original Romana, Mary Tamm, who died aged just 62. A few days later, character actor and one-time guest on the show (Trial of a Time Lord conclusion The Ultimate Foe) Geoffrey Hughes, known to millions as Coronation Street’s Eddie Yates and Keeping Up Appearances’ Onslow, also died.

As such, our latest podKast begins on a sad note, building up to an interesting chat about the Key to Time season, the way fandom reacts to the death of Doctor Who stars and we even give some thought as to how a Cyberman version of Asylum of the Daleks (basically every Cyberman ever in one episode) might work.

This week it’s Christian Cawley and James McLean on podKast duty, so sit back, press play or hit the download button and enjoy!

EyeStalk App Funds The Minister of Chance!

As if seeing life through a Dalek eyestalk wasn’t cool enough, now you can help fund the next episode of the audio series, The Minister of Chance.

All the profits from Paul Gee’s fantastic EyeStalk app between Wednesday 1st August and 8th August will help make episode 4 of the star-studded audio a reality. The iPod/iPad app can transform any image or video on an iOS device, applying one of five Dalek styles, from the black-and-white design of the 1960s (notably from Power of the Daleks) to the viewpoints of the paradigm Daleks first glimpsed in Victory of the Daleks. With Asylum of the Daleks just ‘round the corner, it’s set to be more popular than ever!

The Minister of Chance is a free sci-fi series that stars Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann, Tamsin Greig, Paul Darrow, Jenny Agutter – and loads more! It’s funded solely by contributions, and as such, the cast and crew only receive a small fee; thankfully, they’re all passionate about the project!

91p (or $1.40) from each download of the EyeStalk app will be donated to episode 4 of The Minister of Chance to help them on their way to achieving their $10,000 target.

The First Eleven Doctors As Time Ladies

Some crazed soul on Tumblr (Gladys S of Rockets Surgery) has turned her active imagination and love of Doctor Who to drawing. To add fuel to the continuing fire of  ”can there be a female Doctor?” arguments, she’s depicted the first 11 as women to see how it would’ve turned out.

The results are…intriguing, to say the least.

Some of the Doctors look a bit odd (Seven’s appearance is reminiscent of the time when Due South’s Benton Fraser was ‘forced’ to dress in drag for an episode) but the whole collection is well worth a look and she’s got other Doctor Who fan art on her Tumblr. For what it’s worth, she’s captured the “prim and proper” look that one might associate with the First Doctor.

Which is your favourite? Do any of these illustrations persuade you that a lady Doctor could work?

He's STILL Number One!?

What’s this? News that some bloke called Tennant has beaten our Matt and Tom to top a favourite Doctor poll in the Entertainment Weekly magazine?

Have you gone mad, America? It’s been over two years now, don’t you think you should be getting over it…?

Seriously though, it’s come as a bit of a surprise but congratulations to David Tennant and the legion of fans who must have voted for the Tenth Doctor!

A huge 59% swathe of the vote was cast in Tennant’s favour, while successor and incumbent Time Lord Matt Smith took second place with 16%. Meanwhile the biggest legend in television Tom Baker came third with a not unimpressive 12%.

Christopher Eccleston surprised with 8%, while the remaining Doctors shared the remaining 5% share of the vote.

We’re not going to bore you with a poll right here and now, but what we would like to know is - who would you have voted for, and why?

Doctor Who Hits Entertainment Weekly!

Doctor Who once again makes history this week when on Friday 27th July the world’s longest running sci-fi television show features on the cover of influential US entertainment magazine, Entertainment Weekly!

Incredibly, it is the first time a British TV show has commanded a spot on the cover, further highlighting Doctor Who’s growing U.S. fan-base. Entertainment Weekly was granted behind the scenes access to the cast of the upcoming series, and the cover story features interviews with Matt Smith, Karen Gillan, Arthur Darvill and Executive Producer Steven Moffat. This fantastic coup for the brand follows on from other notable shout-outs on The Late Late Show, Greys Anatomy and Criminal Minds.

Not only was Doctor Who Series 6 the most watched series ever on BBC America, and the most downloaded show on U.S. iTunes last year, (eclipsing celebrated shows such as Mad Men and Glee) but it’s about to be thrust into the faces of pretty much everyone in the USA who doesn’t already know about it!

Entertainment Weekly have sent us this preview of their Doctor Who coverage (also available on their website)…

Entertainment Weekly’s Cover: Inside the Cult of ‘Doctor Who’

How do you know when a TV show has become a cult phenomenon? When its (often comparatively small) ratings are eclipsed by the wild ardor of its fans. Take the case of the British science fiction show Doctor Who, whose current lead, Matt Smith, is this week’s cover star of Entertainment Weekly. The now 49-year-old time Who is hugely popular in its homeland but has always enjoyed a more select appeal here — not that you know that from the devotion of U.S.-based “Whovians.” In 1983, 7,000 people attended a Doctor Who convention in Chicago and over the past couple of years the time-traveling “Doctor” has received a bordering-on-the-absurd number of onscreen shout-outs from Community, Criminal Minds, Craig Ferguson’s The Late Late Show, Supernatural, and Grey’s Anatomy, whose creator, Shonda Rhimes, describes herself as a “psychotic” follower of Matt Smith’s time travel adventures in this week’s cover story.

“It’s not an obscure show anymore,” says executive producer Steven Moffat. “It’s not even a ‘British import.’ It’s just Doctor Who.”

Has the time finally come for the so-called “Time Lord” to break big in America? Could be. The Doctor Who team has assiduously courted fans here with a succession of publicity appearances, including a panel at this year’s Comic-Con where Whovians paid homage to Smith’s red-haired costar Karen Gillan by donning ginger wigs. (No. 2 way you know  a TV show has become a cult favorite? When fans start dressing as characters.) In June 2011, the show’s U.S. broadcaster BBC America enjoyed its best ever ratings with the premiere episode of the sixth season since Doctor Who was revived in 2005, following a 16 year hiatus. The new season, which debuts later this summer, may well be the most eagerly anticipated ever as the Doctor prepares to say goodbye to his two trusty and beloved-by-fans “companions,” Gillan’s Amy Pond and Arthur Darvill’s Rory Williams. In the cover story we track the ups and downs of the show’s remarkable half-century history and preview the new episodes with help from Smith, Gillan, Darvill, and  exec producer, Steven Moffat.

Fans - including those in the UK - can buy the new issue online, which is available on newsstands this Friday.

PodKast with an Elysium

A little later than intended, it’s time for the Kasterborous podKast (with a “K”), in which Christian Cawley, Brian Terranova and James McLean discuss a selection of Doctor Who-related subjects!

Starting off with James’ review of The Crash of the Elysium, we also cover the recent San Diego Comic-Con appearances of the series’ key personnel as well as mulling over what sort of questions we would ask our favourite stars in such a situation. There is also plenty of time to discuss the new look for the Eighth Doctor which has made the transition from New Zealand convention photo to Big Finish cover image!

You can listen to this week’s podKast via the player above, where you will also find an option to download. ITunes users can search the service to find the podKast and subscribe.

More Ultimate Doctor Who Art Auction!

Ever wondered what would happen if a TARDIS and a Dalek merged? Well you can wonder no more as writer James Moran has kindly drawn a prototype picture of what such a creature might actually look like!

Moran, well known for writing Doctor Who episode The Fires of Pompeii as well as two Torchwood episodes is one of the many creative minds that have donated their drawings to part of a huge charity event called The Ultimate Doctor Who art auction.

Not only will Moran’s unique (and signed) piece be available to bid on but there are also some other very special drawings that you might want to try and get your hands on including a picture of the TARDIS drawn by Sylvester McCoy himself, a self portrait of the Inquisitor from 1986’s The Trial of a Time Lord drawn by Lynda Bellingham and even a picture drawn by the late Caroline John.

These wonderful items will be available to bidders in July 2012 and all the proceeds will be given over to various charities of the organisers choosing.

If you head over to fundraiser Twelveby12’s website (he explains the name once you’re there) you will be able to see some of the fantastic work that he has done as well as his plans for the future. This man has done a lot and helped raise an incredible amount for charity so if you haven’t seen his work, get over there and see it now!

Madmen With a Box!

Check out some great Doctor Who drawings at website This Means Waugh, where the artist has recently completed a set of illustrations that depict all eleven Doctors (so far).

At first these pictures were released one by one but you can now view them as an entire set entitled Madmen With A Box!

As a nice extra, each profile picture of the Doctor is given a description as well. There’s the Bohemian, the Dandy, the Cosmic Hobo, the Professor, they’re all there. Interestingly enough, the Sixth Doctor is labelled as “the Bully” and the Ninth Doctor as “the Perpetual Student”.

The best description has to go to the line for the Eleventh Doctor as “the Awkward genius”, which sums up his character perfectly.

Some of you may recognise the artwork from website Doctor Who Online, where it was used to create an interesting epilogue to An Unearthly Child, check it out if you get the chance.

To have a look at the complete Madmen In A Box picture, or to see some similar Batman drawings (based on the excellent Christopher Nolan trilogy) or to see the difference between Good Beards and Evil Beards, then visit http://thismeanswaugh.tumblr.com/.

Doctor Who's Perfect Day

We here at Kasterborous like nothing more than to kick back and relax. It’s the end of the week, and for some of our listeners it might just be that perfect day that they’ve been hoping for.

In that spirit, and because we keep our eye on the weird and wonderful of the Doctor Who world, we bring you this: “conradslater“‘s music video for Lou Reed’s Perfect Day (it’s the celebrity version with several singers).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xSaD0g8xY_k

As you can see, it’s synchronised to the music as best as he was able to do and makes excellent use of Doctor Who action figures from past to present, including some of the more obscure ones (did we see Space Pig in there?). It’s well worth a watch!

We hope this little snippet of fandom brightens up your day!

(And yes, we did feature this back in 2010. But chill out, man, it’s like, Friday, right?)

Is River's Journal Really Worth THAT?!

Have you bought yourself a toy Dalek recently? Or perhaps some other Doctor Who merchandise that tickles your fancy? A badge for your coat or a poster for your wall. Everyone has their favourite bit of Doctor Who fluff that they just have to buy.

But there comes a point where money is an object and a purchase becomes slightly nonsensical. You can’t justify a month’s rent on a Doctor Who item no matter how much you want it, which brings the subject to this little beauty.

An eBay seller who shall remain nameless is offering River Song’s TARDIS journal for sale, you know the one, the Doctor gave it to her in Let’s Kill Hitler and it’s her way of keeping the timelines organised between the two of them. It contains secrets that the Doctor should never know. Or at least it does in Doctor Who.

In real life, the seller is offering the journal for purchase but you have to fill in your own details because it’s all blank pages. This would be fine on any ordinary day except for the fact that the seller wants £957.59 for the item! Not, say, £20.00 but basically the cost of living for a month.

We’re not quite sure what planet they’re on but that seems like one of the most ridiculous sales pitches to ever be conceived. It’s listed as an officially licensed Doctor Who product but still, blimey.

Our advice would be to avoid this and save your money; you could always just buy a diary and paint it blue!

Ultimate Doctor Who Charity Art Auction Continues!

It is our pleasure to bring you news of a couple more items from Robin Miller’s Ultimate Doctor Who Art Auction, which starts in two weeks from today.

The chap running the auction is doing a run-down of the items donated to him (one per day) and has been for the last two weeks. Yesterday’s item was this marvellous piece by Martin Day, the writer of some Doctor Who and Sarah Jane Adventures projects. It’s a pretty neat little sketch, depicting some sort of cloaked monster (a little reminiscent of the Adherents Of The Repeated Meme) with the following text next to it:

What’s the first thing I think of when I hear the words “Doctor Who”? … MONSTERS…

It’s a nice little thing and should hopefully earn them a few bob towards charity.

Today’s item is guaranteed to get two fandoms excited by its very nature - it’s a hand-drawn sketch of a Cybus Cyberman, drawn by Neville Longbottom himself, Matthew Lewis. It’s not perfect but is still pretty cool and will be a good thing to own.

Both items are signed by their respective artists. Keep checking back with his site over the next few days to get more updates on what fabulous items will be revealed next and there’s an archive of blog-posts so you can see what other items have already been revealed!

Celebrate, Regenerate!

Fancy contributing towards a fan complied Doctor Who book spanning every televised episode or just fancy reading a smorgasbord of opinions from fans across the globe?

Well Celebrate, Regenerate – an entirely fan compiled book - are looking for contributors to help bring this project to fruition.

Starting on Friday 13th July, the project has already raised a huge amount of interest – including including Toby Hadoke, Robert Shearman and Ed Stradling from the DVD range - thanks to celebrity retweets (from Marcus Wilson, Sophie Aldred, Tom Spilsbury, Nicola Bryant, Barnaby Edwards and various other Doctor Who writers, actors and enthusiasts) and people spreading the word.

You might be thinking ‘well there are only so many episodes; how am I going to get my entry into the book?’ Well my curious friends, the project based around this blog are looking for multiple submissions for every episode with the aim to publish everyone’s 300- 500 word articles – with the tantalising USP of total freedom to write what takes your fancy within those episodes.

The submission deadline is 1st October due to the overwhelming interest the project has raised so far with the aim of producing an A4 book and an online flash ‘zine soon after.

So if you’re interested in contributing get in touch via the Celebrate, Regenerate Facebook page or celebrateregenerate.blogspot.co.uk.

The Minister's About To Roll Those Dice...

With just two days to go until the new episode of free internet audio drama The Minister Of Chance, they’ve released a trailer so you can hear for yourself just what lies in store. It sounds like quite an interesting piece of work, and they’re funded entirely by their listeners! Think of it like PBS and you’re more or less there.

The series has managed to attract some fairly big names despite being made for next to nothing.  Paul McGann and Sylvester McCoy have both made appearances in the show; neither of them play their former roles of the Doctor. Also appearing in the new episode is Tamsin Grieg, of Green Wing, Black Books and Episodes fame (she also appeared in 2005’s Ninth Doctor adventure The Long Game).

Both of the previous episodes and the upcoming third one are/will be available to download from iTunes and the website. There’s also a  9 minute prologue which sets the scene for the series, should you need an introduction.

If you’re eagerly awaiting this episode, then take a listen to the trailer in the audio player below!

[display_podcast]

Incidentally, there is also an eBay auction from the makers of the show, selling off a t-shirt signed by Paul McGann and Sylvester McCoy.Bidding is at £20 at the time of writing

and there’s seven days left, so take a look!

You can find the complete free Minister of Chance episodes to download at www.ministerofchance.com.

The Sonic Screwdriver Remote Is Coming...

It’s been billed as the best sonic screwdriver ever – and I’m inclined to agree. The Sonic Screwdriver Universal Remote Control – developed by the Wand Company and BBC Worldwide – is set for release on 31st August, priced £59.99.

Now, that may seem a high asking-price for what essentially just changes channel and turns the volume up, but just think how cool you’ll look putting Countdown on using a sonic screwdriver. Plus, of course, this is Time Lord technology; it isn’t just limited to something a standard Sky remote can achieve. Aside from televisions, it’s also compatible with DVD and Blu-ray players and iPod docks, and, using advanced gesture recognition software, can store up to 39 remote control codes, based on 13 gestures across 3 memory banks.

As well as a practice mode, the remote features a guided set-up, with spoken prompts, and a personal lock code, with a three-digit PIN. There’s also an FX mode with 13 authentic sounds from the Whoniverse (one for each gesture performed) and every two seconds, the tip flashes briefly. And one of eleven special Morse code messages beeps after every 1,963rd flash! (Yes, 1963 – a nice touch.)

Suitable for both right-handed and left-handed individuals, the copper-plated sonic is 221mm long, with a diameter of 30mm, and stays true to the eleventh Doctor’s TV version with die-cast metal, polymers and synthetic, soft-touch rubber. There’s also a presentation display case, and a double-sided, fully-illustrated instruction manual, previews of which give us a good glimpse into the remote’s functionality.

It looks as if all the sections of the screwdriver are fully utilised, reacting to circular, stabbing and up, down, and side-to-side movements.

When Doctor Who returns to BBC One, you’ll be able to turn the volume up using Time Lord Tech. It’ll be soooo, unbelievably cool.

Best sonic screwdriver ever. Best remote control ever. And the best collectable ever?

You can pre-order it from ForbiddenPlanet.com for just £59.99!

Biff Bang Bobble Heads!

Breaking out the collectables Jason Lenzi, C.E.O & Founder of Biff Bang Pow Toys has been showing off their Doctor Who Fiftieth Anniversary wares at this year’s San Diego Comic Con in an interview video for G4TV – and it’s not all bobble heads!

Alongside exhibiting last year’s pieces Biff Bang Pow have added two new figures to their retro line; an 8 inch, fully articulated and in retro fabric, duel pack containing Sutekth the Destroyer from the Pyramids of Mars and Leela from The Face of Evil, which for all of us not currently in San Diego will be available in November 2012.

Also coming in November, it’s a retro 8 inch Dalek model ‘grounded in the Genesis of the Daleks serial’.

Video Games - E3 2012

Both this and the retro figures are subject to licensor approval.

Thinking a little outside of the (toy) box, what better way to usher in the anniversary than with eleven pint glasses modelled on the distinctive dress sense of each Doctor? Better still, well then how about Dalek and TARDIS tumblers?

This Does Not Actually Screw Things

A couple of years ago, we learned that scientists working in the field of ‘funology’ had come up with a sonic screwdriver remote that actually controls your telly.

The remote works in a similar way to the Wii Remote, with arm gestures being the order of the day. A wave upwards and downwards will change the channel either way, while waving it in a circle will give you control over life and death on such a scale tha—sorry, got carried away there. What waving it in a circle actually does is give you volume control.

What’s worrying about this is that it isn’t clear if there are any buttons on the thing (although there is the capacity to store remote codes, which we suppose amounts to the same thing). This will make getting to Babestation troublesome, at the very least. Especially for people who can only see your back and the telly.

It doesn’t just control your TV - it also works on iPod docks or Blu-ray players. Which is great for those who’ve lost their remotes.

So far, it’s not known when the screwdriver will be on sale but if there’s any justice in the world, it’ll be in the hands of small children by the 25th of December, turning to the Christmas Special. One for the big kid inside all of us!

Reading History from a Carrot...

Coming 27th September is Doctor Who: A History of the Universe in 100 Objects by James Goss and Steve Tribe – a novel and brilliant look at the Doctor’s life through his most memorable objects.

Each object tells a story whether it’s a fob watch at the onset of the Great War or a carrot growing on the first human colony on Mars. Taken together, they tell of empires rising and falling, wars won and lost, and planets destroyed and reborn.

A History of the Universe in 100 Objects is an indispensable guide to the most important items that have ever existed - or that are yet to exist.

Albert DePetrillo, senior editorial director for BBC Books, is clearly enchanted by the idea:

“How do you convey the size and originality of the Doctor Who universe? It seems impossible, but James and Steve’s book is perhaps the best place to start. They’ve selected 100 items from the history of the show and used them to tell a huge - and hugely enjoyable - story.

Anyone wanting to explore the deeply creative world of Doctor Who will love it – and Peter McKinstry’s stunning artwork helps make this the ultimate gift for Doctor Who fans.”

Doctor Who: A History of the Universe in 100 Objects by James Goss and Steve Tribe is available to pre-order from Amazon for release on the 27th September for £17.00

Funky Doctor Who Paper Toys

Once in a while a brand of Doctor Who merchandise comes along that’s just too… cute to ignore and with a new range of paper toys that includes monsters and different incarnations of our favourite Time Lord, that’s exactly what’s happened!

Ryan Hall has designed a tremendous range of handmade 3D toys for you to purchase that would make an ideal gift for any Doctor Who fan or, quite frankly, anyone with a love for quirky shelf trophies.

The newest range from Hall is of the Fourth Doctor, looking suitably moody and flanked by a Cyberman, a Dalek, a Sontaran and his missus the TARDIS. But the range doesn’t stop there; look a little closer and you’ll also see a rather angry looking Sixth Doctor with a rather bald Peri, Sarah Jane Smith in her Ealing attic, the Eighth Doctor in his gargantuan console room alongside an earlier incarnation of the Master, and the Eleventh Doctor (with a wonderful swirly thing emanating from his sonic screwdriver) alongside Amy and Rory.

Other incarnations and characters include the Seventh Doctor and Ace on the run from a very innocent looking Dalek, the Tenth Doctor (complete with 3D glasses a la Army of Ghosts), the Second Doctor at his beloved TARDIS console, the Third Doctor and Jo facing off against an Ice Warrior, the Fifth Doctor and Adric changing the events of Earthshock by facing off against a Cyberman together, the Ninth Doctor and Captain Jack standing outside an ominous looking shop window and even the First Doctor standing outside I.M. Foreman’s junkyard, where the whole story started almost fifty years ago. Now that’s a lot of hard work! They also come in some brilliantly inventive packaging as well!

Other popular characters from the He-Man and Star Wars Universe are also available. Ryan Hall’s work has been part of many a display, especially around the city of Cardiff in the Made in Wales exhibition.

William Russell Reads The Aztecs !

The Aztecs is surely one of Doctor Who’s greatest stories, full of sizzling dialogue and intriguing tales regarding the downside to time travel.

For those young enough to remember the Target novelisation from 1984 prepare to get excited as we can announce that AudioGo plan to release The Aztecs as an unabridged dramatization on CD read by original Doctor Who companion William Russell (Ian Chesterton) who will flesh out John Lucarotti’s book with some fresh sound design.

“The TARDIS materialises in Mexico during the Aztec civilisation, and Barbara is hailed as a reincarnation of Yetaxa, High Priest of the Aztecs. But whilst each of the travellers becomes embroiled in the arcane ways of the Aztecs, Barbara’s determination to change history seems doomed from the start.”

This fresh interpretation of the novel will excite Doctor Who fans old and new as it reminds the world exactly how the first Doctor took a unique and impressive stance against the effects of interfering with events that have already happened. For anyone who wants to find out exactly when the Doctor started questioning the implications of history tampering, this is the best place!

Doctor Who: The Aztecs will be available from www.audiogo.co.uk via download from 1st August 2012 and on CD (2 of them to be exact) from 2nd August 2012 price at £13.25, or you could save yourself a few quid and head to Amazon where you can pre-order for just £6.18.
